Why you need antioxidants in your skincare routine

Before going on to discuss antioxidants, we need to first understand what exactly are free radicals and how they interact with our skin. They are the reason why we need antioxidants in the first place.

1) Our Skin

The skin serves as a protective barrier between the body’s internal organs and the environment. It is a complex organ composed of many cell types and structures.

The ageing process, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is believed to be influenced by the formation of free radicals, also known as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

This oxidation process can be caused by UV rays, pollution, alcohol, smoking and even stress. While oxidation is a normal process and the body can normally handle free radicals well, if free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur. In the long run, the accumulation of free radicals in the body can cause premature skin aging.

But what is a free radical exactly?

2) FREE RADICALS AND OXIDATIVE STRESS

Definition of Free Radical: An atom, molecule or ion that has unpaired electrons.

Free radicals are molecules that can damage our body. For exemple, when our body uses oxygen as it does for breathing, it creates free radicals and the damage caused by those free radicals is called "oxidative stress".

The balance between oxidants and antioxidants is crucial for life. An imbalance will potentially lead to damage as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to diseases such as inflammatory diseases, radiation damage, cancer and ageing of the skin.

3) HOW DO ANTIOXIDANTS WORK?

Antioxidants stabilize free radicals to minimize their harmful effect. An antioxidant effectively inhibits the oxidation of other molecules, which means they don’t turn into free radicals. They are the key to age prevention and ther daily use in cosmetic products helps reduce UV-induced skin damage.

Antioxidants not only help combat the elements responsible for the visible signs of aging, but also can calm skin, help reveal a more youthful appearance, and revitalize dull-looking skin.

Some of the most common antioxidants used in cosmetics:
  • VITAMIN E:

vitamin E is known as a very potent antioxidant. Protects cell membranes in our skin by stopping the production of free radicals. Can help reduce skin damage caused by UV exposure thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. When combined with vitamins C and D, it is even more powerful.

  • VITAMIN C:

Vitamin C is essential for tissue growth and repair. Also regulates cell division and growth, is involved in signal transduction, and has roles in several physiological processes, such as immune stimulation, synthesis of collagen and reducing pigmentation.

 VITAMIN E & VITAMIN C TOGETHER:

When combined, vitamins E and C are far more effective at helping to prevent and reduce UV damage. These two are excellent anti-aging ingredients that can help keep skin looking its best. Vitamin C combined with vitamin E’s ability to scavenge free radicals, these two vitamins together are so essential for skin health.

  •  BAKUCHIOL

Bakuchiol is found in the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It is a potent antioxidant and helps fight signs of ageing, such as fine lines and loss of firmness by targeting free radicals. Bakuchiol can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
